Gus took this picture. True story: I haven't worked out much since Gus was conceived. A few months ago when I put my running shoes back on for the first time in years, Gus thought I was wearing daddy's shoes. Because he'd never seen me in that kind of shoe before.

Yep. I skipped a couple of days. See previous post about sleeping deprivation. This load of laundry is super clean because I washed it once and pulled it into the laundry bag intending to immediately empty the bag and go get the next load. Various kid diversions later I grabbed the full bag in the hallway, patting myself on the back for having been able to gather the day's laundry without even realizing it. Various kid diversions later, I went looking for that clean pile of laundry to get it folded. At which point I realized the dirty piles were still present...but there was no clean pile to be found. So you see, I can't even do my laundry; how I expected myself to take a picture every day is beyond me.

8lb 12oz, 20 inches, born at 4:38 am on July 9.

Lucia means light (we use the Spanish pronunciation, loo-SEE-uh). In Italy, the name Lucia was traditionally given to baby girls born at daybreak. Our Lucia was born about an hour before sunrise.

Dorotea is an Italian/Spanish form of Dorothy, which means "gift of God" and honors women from both of our families: Adam's paternal grandmother and two aunts on Sarah's maternal side. It is pronounced dor-oh-TAY-uh.

Today was Agustin's last ride in the enormous capsule we rented from the City of Melbourne (we went to our last Mum's Bible Study). This capsule is a pretty typical Australian infant seat.

Agustin's first official food was avocado (mama snuck him a little pear the day before). He looks like he loved it in this picture, but in reality, it required quite a bit of coaxing.

Agustin had his first go at a highchair at the Bluefire Steakhouse. The novelty of the experience allowed mommy and daddy to enjoy appetizers without an extra set of hands grabbing for them.

Agustin just rolled over from his back to his tummy. He's been doing tummy to back for a while now, but as soon as he figured out that he could go this way too, he started 360 degree rolling around on the bed. I don't think he's realized yet that he can get places by doing this. Shhhhhh!

Portland and Bridgewater

From the Great Ocean Road, we continued north to Portland, Victoria, where we stayed in the Captains Room at the lovely, historic Annesley House. On our way back down to Melbourne we stopped at Bridgewater Beach.

Agustin was not digging the road trip experience. He seems to have trouble sleeping in his carseat. Here we are pulled over on the side of a country road, and Adam is trying to calm him down.

Twelve Apostles

We drove up Great Ocean Road and stopped off to see the Twelve Apostles—gorgeous rock formations off of the coast. It was an overcast day and there were zillions of flies, but it was still worth it.

New Year's Fire & Light

We had an amazing view from our apartment of both the New Year's fireworks over the harbor and a sizable lightning storm. Check out the video clip from the 9:15 show. The midnight fireworks were awesome--they launched them from different points all around the city, and from our apartment we could see several different sites going off. It was so fun to share it with some great friends and toast the new year with sparkling shiraz.

Phillip Island Penguin Parade

We drove out to Phillip Island to see the nightly "penguin parade" of foot-tall penguins emerging from their day of fishing at sea to cross the beach and find their way into their burrows. They are very cute, but you'll have to take our word for it since no photography/video is allowed. We bought Agustin a stuffed penguin to commemorate yet another experience he slept through.

Agustin has seen a bunch of cool animals--he just doesn't know it. Mom and Dad were excited to see a Tasmanian devil and koalas for the first time.

We've rented a car for the week, and we're planning some adventures. Adam is doing a great job driving on the "wrong" side of the rode, and Agustin is enjoying his carseat (except when he doesn't).

On Boxing Day, we went for a ride on the Puffing Billy, a century-old steam train, with our American crew: Scott, Karyn, and Michael. It was a beautiful trip through the Dandenong Ranges--and it was the first time Sarah and Agustin had been outside the city of Melbourne and its suburbs.

Christmas 09

We had a nice Christmas: Agustin got a platypus from mom and dad for his first Christmas, and we enjoyed lunch at the house of our friends who are from Melbourne but used to live in San Jose.

Where We've Been

We got engaged in December 2005, married in May of 2006, and honeymooned in Greece. Sarah took up contracting work, and together we visited Japan and Mexico.

We kicked off 2007 with a trip to Canada. In the summer, we took trips to Kauai and Vermont, and then rescued a lively Labrador Retriever mix from the Humane Society, right before Adam took a study abroad trip to India. The pup needed lots of training. We celebrated Christmas in Carmel with friends. The pup came along.

In 2008, Adam earned his MBA from Santa Clara University. We celebrated his graduation with a trip to Spain, and spent our third anniversary in Portugal—we also hit up Gibraltar and Morocco while we were in the area. We spent the rest of the summer remodeling our kitchen. We were in Boston for Christmas and New York for New Years.

In 2009, we learned we were expecting! A few months later, Adam was offered a job opportunity in Australia, and we accepted. We packed up our house in six weeks and moved. Three short weeks later, our son was born (seven weeks early). He spent a month in the Special Care Nursery and came home on October 3.
