Delphi

Who knew the navel of the world was so picturesque?

Delphi was a three-hour bus ride from Athens. We went with a tour group and an excellent guide who, on the ride there, pointed out the intersection where Oedipus killed his father.

You can't really see from the picture how breathtaking the mountains are. On the left, you can see the columns of the temple where the Oracle would sit. To the right is a valley with 4 million olive trees.

The ruins of the temple where the Oracle would smoke out--I mean, inhale sacred fumes--and give her cryptic answers to the all-consuming questions of pilgrims. The columns mark the entrance--all the way to the right is the actual room she would sit in.

This is the spot where legend dictates that the eagles dropped their stones to indicate the world's center. So there you have it--the earth has an outie.

  1. Who knew that the earth had an outie? I am on my way there myself...
